Bookmarked: Tattoo fly-over to go ahead despite penguin panic

The RAF looks set to carry on with plans to stage ceremonial fly-overs at the final Edinburgh Tattoo show, despite fears they could upset penguins.

Officials at Edinburgh Zoo asked for the flight path to be altered, claiming the roar of low-flying jet engines could be "stressful" for animals. With breading season well underway, zookeepers feared eggs could be smashed as penguins fled from the noise.

But the power to alter flight paths lies with traffic control at Edinburgh Airport, leaving the RAF unusually powerless. They contacted the Corstorphine-based zoo in advance of this year's Military Tattoo, but could only apologise for the noise.
