Bookmarked: South Leeds Community Radio nets award

A Leeds community radio station has gained a £500 award for using digital media to unite local people from different backgrounds and cultures and make them better informed.

South Leeds Community Radio, based at Hillside in Beeston, broadcasts over the internet and has more than 90 volunteers producing live programmes involving music, event listings and public service information.

Station director Al Garthwaite said:

"Our area is within the most deprived 20 per cent of the UK and is perceived negatively by many other Leeds residents.

"There's a lot of community activity, and there are opportunities, but not everyone knows about them or is confident enough to take them up. Our aim is to let as many local people as possible know what's happening in our area and about opportunities they can take advantage of."

It netted the £500 from the Inspiring Voices Awards, which is run by The Media Trust.
