Bookmarked: Online fight to save Union Books in Leeds from closure

An online campaign has been launched to save a union-run bookshop in Leeds.

A report by new Leeds Student editor Laura MacKenzie says Leeds University Union (LUU) bosses have announced the likely closure of Union Books in November after a recent forecast saw the shop making a loss in the current financial year.

The University of Leeds UCU blog has a post about it here. There's also a Facebook page opposing the closure and an online petition with more than 400 signatures.

One of the comments on the Facebook page reads;

"We've got two bars, three nightclubs, a pasty shop, hairdressers, beauty salon and all sorts of other "student essentials", but the book shop has to go because its not making enough money? Is this a university union or a shopping mall?"

There's a Q&A on the topic to explain the proposed closure, which would lead to five job losses, over at the LUU website. LUU has defended its actions, claiming it had made "every effort to secure an outcome from these discussions which would protect our staff and maintain a quality service for members."
