A Leeds man has launched a Facebook page which aims to get a million people to voice their opposition to the cuts announced by the government in last week's comprehensive spending review.
Alex Sobel works with community organisations in Leeds and says the future of many third sector organisations are under threat because of the cuts. As a result, he has sat up the national One Million Against The Cuts page on Facebook. He said:
"I was inspired to do this by the fact that so many different parts of society will be affected and we need to get people together and let them know what is happenning and show the widespread public opposition to the cuts. Social networking is a perfect tool, especially Facebook with over 25 million users. This isn't a Leeds-only campaign, it's a national one.
"The community sector is under considerable threat of cuts, especially those in support and infrastructure. My son also uses the creche at Scott Hall Sports Centre which is one of the proposed services Leeds council proposes to close and my wfe is active in the group to save it."
So far his efforts have attracted more than 1,600 supporters.
Sobel said the page was designed to support general opposition to the cuts and build mainstream public opinion. He has been active in the trades union movement for over 10 years and was involved with the Leeds refuse workers' strike last year.
