Bookmaker slashes odds on Arsenal sacking Unai Emery this season

The odds on Unai Emery to be sacked as Arsenal boss before the end of the season have been slashed to just 6/4.

Arsenal struggled to a 2-2 draw with bottom club Watford on Sunday, prompting criticisms of their performance.

Emery is only just into his second season with the Gunners after leading them to fifth place and the Europa League final in his debut campaign.

But Arsenal's lacklustre display in May's final, coupled with an indifferent start to the season, has left Emery on shaky territory.

Man City assistant coach and former Arsenal midfielder, Mikel Arteta , has been installed as the favourite to take over the reins at the Emirates should Emery depart.

Arteta was linked with the role prior to Emery's appointment, and is 5/1 to be his successor.

Gunners legends Patrick Vieira and Fredrik Ljungberg follow closely behind at 6/1.

Vieira is now managing Nice in the top flight in home nation France, while Ljungberg was recently promoted to the first-team coaching staff at Arsenal following his impressive work with the under-23's.

Arsene Wenger is also a shock candidate to return to his old post, but is priced at an unlikely 50/1.

Former Juventus manager Max Allegri (8/1), Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers (10/1), and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry (20/1) make up the list of favourites, supplied by bookmaker Ladbrokes.

Arsenal started the campaign with back-to-back wins against Newcastle and Burnley , before a defeat to table-toppers Liverpool .

They then came from two-down to earn a valuable point in the north London derby, before suffering a reverse fate having led against the Hornets.

More concerning than the result was the amount of shots Watford had during the match, managing 31 attempts at goal to Arsenal's seven.

Emery now faces a potentially tricky period of games, with a trip to Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday up first.

The Gunners then have Premier League clash with Aston Villa (H) and Man Utd (A) which sandwich a Carabao Cup tie with Nottingham Forest - who knocked them out of the FA Cup two seasons ago.
