Bookies slash odds on February being coldest ever recorded in Ireland

Bookies have slashed odds on this month being the coldest February ever recorded in Ireland.

The price has halved to 5/1 following Met Eireann's snow/ice warning - which will be valid until midnight on Tuesday.

Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: "The cold snap has prompted a flurry of bets on this February being the coldest in Irish history."

Ireland is bracing itself for more snowfall as a cold blast of air "from Canada" is gripping the country.

The AA has warned motorists of hazardous road conditions following snowfall in Limerick, Tipperary, Laois, Kildare, Wicklow, Carlow and Kilkenny.

And winds from Storm Ciara will continue to affect coastal areas despite the cyclone tracking away from Irish shores.

The national forecaster has issued a statement as the cold snap is set to bring bitterly cold conditions and "significant wind chill".

A Met Eireann meteorologist said: "As Storm Ciara moves away today, colder air originating from Canada begins to feed down over Ireland.

"This will bring scattered wintry precipitation later tonight. The risk of snowfall increases during Monday and the risk will continue through Tuesday.

"While snow showers may develop anywhere they will occur chiefly in parts of the west and north, with some accumulations possible.

"The windy conditions that the country has experienced over the last few days will persist and coupled with the colder air it will feel bitterly cold, with significant wind chill."

Parts of Ireland will experience freezing temperatures and gale force winds on Monday night.

And a predicted weather map from Met Eireann shows areas in the north and west getting hit by snow showers.

A forecaster said: "Cold and very windy tonight with further showers of rain, hail, sleet and snow, with some snow accumulations in places especially across western and northern counties.

"Overnight minimums of 0 to +2 degrees, with frost and icy patches in spite of the strong wind."

They added: "A frosty and icy start to Tuesday morning with snow lying in places, particularly in the north and west.

"Cold and very windy again with sunny spells and further hail, sleet and snow showers.

"Afternoon highs of 2 to 4 degrees, in strong and squally westerly winds."
