Bookies reveal their major Rangers miscalculation as Steven Gerrard's side turn Celtic into title no-hopers

Celtic's draw with Hibs on Monday moved Rangers another step closer to the Scottish Premiership title, and as far as bookies are concerned, it's now a foregone conclusion.

Kevin Nisbet's late equaliser ensured Neil Lennon 's side dropped points at home, and left them 21 points behind the runaway leaders - a chasm that looks insurmountable even with their three games in hand.

Steven Gerrard 's charges had edged out Aberdeen on Sunday as they continue a mightily impressive season. They are yet to lose in the league, and with 21 wins from 23 matches, they are on track to surpass even Brendan Rodgers' undefeated centurions.

The situation has changed dramatically from pre-season, when Rangers were viewed as 2/1 outsiders, and Celtic were backed to get their tenth successive title over the line.

But even if the defending champions were to attain a perfect record in their final 18 matches, they would have to pray for an unthinkable collapse across the city to stand any chance of reviving their dream.

And the new state of play is reflected in the betting odds as Oddschecker have Rangers as far out as 1/40, leaving them with a 98 per cent chance of lifting the trophy come May.

Meanwhile Celtic are a distant 20/1 to recover their title hopes.

Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson said: “Heading into the season, bookies didn’t give Steven Gerrard’s and his side a lot of hope.

“Before a ball was kicked, bookies estimated Rangers had around a 33 per cent chance of winning the league.

"Those same bookies’ odds now reflect a 98 per cent chance of capturing their 55th league title."

Meanwhile, Kemar Roofe is the new favourite to finish the season as top goalscorer, cut to 4/1 from 5/1.

Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard is the 5/1 second favourite, followed by Hibs’ Kevin Nisbet (8/1) and Rangers right-back James Tavernier (8/1).
