Booker-winner Douglas Stuart to adapt his debut novel 'Shuggie Bain' into a TV series

Author Douglas Stuart won the prestigious Booker Prize in 2020 for his debut novel 'Shuggie Bain'. And now, news is that he is all set to adapt his award-winning novel for a television series.

The book 'Shuggie Bain' is named after the protagonist in the book. It tells the story of a young boy, who struggles through poverty while looking after his alcoholic mother while growing up in Glasgow during the 1980s. Stuart's debut novel is based on his own difficult childhood and he had started writing it roughly a decade ago as a part of his therapy.

“When I was a kid, I was just this creative, feminine, free spirit,” Stuart told BBC Arts in an interview.

Now, the Scottish author is all set to "expand" the story and bring in "new threads" in its screen adaptation.

Talking about the development, Stuart said, as per The Bookseller, "I’m thrilled to bring the Bain family to the screen and the opportunity to expand on my novel and to bring new threads to the story, exploring hardships and struggles as well as the compassion, humour, and resilience that is so central to the Scottish spirit."

As per reports, the filming of the new TV series will happen in Scotland.
