Journalists should not be expected to choose between having a conscience and having a job, says the author of an excellent new book, entitled The Ethical Journalist. Tony Harcup, a senior lecturer at Sheffield University's journalism department, believes we should celebrate the kind of journalism that informs and questions; that treats people as citizens rather than merely as consumers; and that has room for a quirkiness of viewpoint. His book, which I was delighted to endorse, explores a range of issues journalists have to confront and uses real-life anecdotes to illustrate his points. It's published by Sage at £19.99.
