Book of Condolence opened for legendary fundraiser Tom Gilzean at Edinburgh's City Chambers

People are able to pay their own tributes to legendary Edinburgh fundraiser Tom Gilzean when a Book of Condolence is opened today (Thursday).

Lord Provost Frank Ross will be the first to sign the book along with a representative from the Children's Hospital Charity.

It will be found in the main reception of Edinburgh's City Chambers from 11.30am and the council say anyone is welcome to come along and leave their own messages.

Mr Gilzean passed away in hospital on Monday evening at the age of 99. He had suffered a series of small strokes. Tributes have been flooding in ever since. A crowdfunding page has also been set up in his memory to help support one of the charities he was so passionate about supporting. So far more than £450 has been generated.

For decades Mr Gilzean has been seen out in parts of the city centre collecting for good causes, and his incredible efforts helped generate £1 million for charity down the years.

Lord Provost Frank Ross said: "The flood of tributes for Tom from local people has been tremendous. There are lots of people who would love to see his memory live on in some way or another in the capital and we always encourage people to come forward with proposals to be considered by the council.

"To capture the touching memories and messages being shared by citizens, we'll be opening a Book of Condolence at the City Chambers and  shaking a tin in Tom's memory. Everyone is welcome to sign it to pay their respects and, of course, to leave a donation for the Edinburgh Children's Hospital Charity."
