Book hunt teacher who has created a book vending machine to encourage kids to read

This passionate teacher from South Shields has taken the education world by storm.

After launching the Look for a Book North East initiative in July to help encourage children to read, Christine Elrick's scheme has since become a global phenomenon.

Tens of thousands of families have been placing their old books around their communities and across the world during their holidays for others to find.

But this passionate teacher, 43, is not stopping there, she has now invented a book vending machine to further engage children in reading.

Now into its fourth week, the machine named the Imagination Station by pupils, has already got the little book worms at Westoe Crown Primary School to start to enjoy reading.

Francesca Mills, 9, loves the new invention and has since grown a love for reading.

She said: "It has really encouraged me to want to read more and it's really fun. Miss Elrick is very kind and her idea is amazing."

Passionate reader, Callum Nichols, 8, said: "The Imagination Station encourages us to be more active in our learning instead of playing on an Ipad we now pick up a book and read"

The Imagination Station offers a range of favourite children books for all ages, from The Gruffallo to tales by Michael Morpurgo.

One lucky pupil from each class every week is voted by their fellow pupils for their reading efforts to be entered into a draw to win a gold coin for the machine.

A winner from Key Stage One and Key Stage Two is revealed in an assembly, and they can then choose any book they would like to take home and keep forever.

How the 'Imagination Station' is getting South Shields pupils reading

After seeing posts on social media showing several seeing small states in America using vending machines as libraries, Christine Elrick found a broken vending machine and then found a company who could modify it so it would be able to dispense books.

Christine, Head of Literacy said: "The children are absolutely loving it. We are always encouraging reading at the school we are aware now children don't read as much as they should because of the things around them like Xbox, phones and TV.

"Reading is a life skill and is something that you have to encourage and motivate children to do. This is an exciting, different way to do it."

The Imagination Station has proved to be a massive hit to the thousands of pupils at the school who now have started to see reading as an enjoyable activity to do.

Headteacher, Steve Price added: "The Imagination Station is a fantastic simple idea to help encourage children to start engaging in reading more.

"At this school, we are always wanting to find different ways to motivate our pupils and the Imagination station helps children to start enjoying reading and to swap playing their video games to pick up a book instead."
