'Book an MOT test without delay,' Martin Lewis advises drivers

Drivers have been advised to book an MOT test if their car is due one after the rules have changed.

Martin Lewis, the Money Saving Expert, has advised motorists after certain rules have been altered this week.

MOT tests will become mandatory again from August 1, Roads minister Baroness Vere announced earlier this week, the Manchester Evening News has reported.

It comes after the law was changed during lockdown for those people due an MOT on their vehicles.

The tests were given a six month exemption at the start of lockdown.

Baroness Vere said: "As people return to our roads, it is vital that motorists are able to keep their vehicles safe. That’s why as restrictions are eased, from 1 August MOT testing will again become mandatory.

"Garages across the country are open and I urge drivers who are due for their MOT to book a test as soon they can."

Martin Lewis has now issued his advice.

Posting on Twitter, he warned: "MOT tests to restart on 1 August. If you have an MOT due on or after that you must get the test done.

“However if your MOT is due before hand, you get six months added to the deadline. E.g. due on 15 July you need to get it done by 15 Jan.”
