'Boob team' urge young people to 'check their chests' for breast cancer

Young people are being urged to "check their chests" for breast cancer.

The 'Uni Boob Team' at Edge Hill University is working with breast cancer charity Coppafeel to encourage, empower and educate all young people to recognise the symptoms of breast cancer.

Emilia McRobie, a 19-year-old Education and English student, launched the society in September 2021.

She was inspired to create the society after seeing Instagram posts from breast cancer awareness charity Coppafeel about their work with university students.

Society president Emilia told the ECHO : "I followed Coppafeel for years and recently saw a reel about the exciting things Uni Boob Teams get up to.

"I thought, that's something Edge Hill needs.

"We've had so many people saying it's a really good thing to start and it's almost shocking we've never had a society like this before."

The society's mission is fully inclusive of all men, women and non-binary people.

Emilia continued: "Quite a lot of people just assume that breast cancer is a disease for women.

"There are 400 men a year who get diagnosed with breast cancer, and of course there are transgender people who may also be affected.

She added: "It's really important everyone feels the charity is for them.

"Even if a man doesn't get breast cancer, it's highly likely he will know somebody who does or is affected by it."

The Uni Boob Team at Edge Hill has received a warm reception from campus, with society membership reaching 100 students.

Emilia said: "Everyone loves dressing up in the big giant boob we've got and taking pictures around campus."

Campaigns headed by the Uni Boob Team include awareness stalls across the university campus, a pub quiz fundraising event, and a 'shower hijack', where members handed out shower hangers visualising the symptoms of breast cancer so students can regularly check their chests.

To date, the society has raised more than £500 for Coppafeel.

Coppafeel is a UK-based breast cancer charity the aim of instilling young people with the knowledge and tools they need to understand their bodies and recognise changes so cancer is detected quickly and patients have the best possible chance of survival.

The Uni Boob Team initiative was launched by Coppafeel in 2010 to empower students to disseminate information and raise awareness amongst their peers.

A spokesperson from Coppafeel said: "Our Uni Boob Team programme has been running since 2010 and we are now in over 45 unis nationwide.

"It is essential work which allows us to reach thousands of students on the ground in their natural habitats and arm them with our important message.

"Everyone has breast tissue which means anyone can be affected by breast cancer so it's vital we include people of all genders, ethnicities, disabilities and ages in our messaging.

"Engaging with students is a core part of creating an inclusive and accessible message that speaks to all young people."

The Edge Hill Uni Boob Team is running a series of events over the 2021/2022 academic year to increase awareness of breast cancer and raise money for Coppafeel. You can donate to their JustGiving page here.
