Bono woke up in White House bedroom after boozing with former President Barack Obama

U2 frontman Bono has confessed that he once woke up in the White House bedroom that once belonged to Abraham Lincoln after a night of drinking with former president Barack Obama.

The 62-year-old admitted he shared several "strong cocktails" with Barack, 61, during the American's tenure as the 44th president of the United States.

Bono had been visiting the first family with his wife, Ali Hewson, when their drinking antics got the better of him, and he passed out.

The Beautiful Day singer said Barack was much more measured in his approach to the night.

He also explained that the reason for his passing out came from an allergic reaction to salicylates, which can often be found in red wine.

Bono said this can prompt him to "fall asleep somewhere" - in this instance, the former president's residence.

Speaking to Zoe Ball on BBC Radio 2, the rocker said: "I had them [cocktails], and the wine and the allergy, and I ended up slipping out for a kip, and the president said to Ali after about 10 minutes, 'Where's Bono gone?'

"She said, 'He's just gone for a sleep.' [Obama] said, 'I'm sorry?'

"She said, 'He has to, he just has to go for these sleeps. He'll be back in 10 minutes. I've been with him for 30 years, don't you worry a thing about him, Mr President. I'll go find him'."

After insisting he accompany Ali in her search for her husband, Bono said he was found dozing in the Lincoln bedroom.

He continued: "And there I was in Lincoln's bedroom, asleep, fallen asleep in the bosom of Abraham himself. He just woke me up and laughed. President laughed his head off."

According to Bono, it's an incident Barack continues to mock him for to this day and tells people he can "drink me under the table," refusing to believe the allergy reasoning.

"He does make strong cocktails, though, just saying," the musician added.

Later in the chat, Bono revealed the White House is far from the first random place he's been found asleep, confessing he's "fallen asleep in really awkward spots". Among those he listed included the lighting desk of Sonic Youth, a car bonnet and on the street.
