Bono’s wife Ali Hewson locked in planning row over beach access at couple's luxury home

Bono’s wife Ali is locked in a planning row over access to the beach beside the couple’s home.

Ali Hewson has lodged an objection to plans to build tea rooms, two houses, chalets and a retail unit on the strand at Killiney, South Dublin.

In a letter she revealed how the access the family have enjoyed for 30 years to the beach would be blocked.

She has also objected to a gate and fence which have been erected on a site known as White Cottages beside the home they share with their four adult children as it impedes their right of way to the shoreline.

The Sunday Times reported in submissions to Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council she told planners the family had “unrestricted legal access to Killiney beach for 30 years due to an established right of way through White Cottages.”

Businessman Declan O’Regan is planning to rejuvenate a disused Victorian tearoom at the site.

He recently erected a timber fence and gate to secure the site which blocks the U2 star’s family from accessing the beach they say.

In a letter written on behalf of residents of Temple Hill, Mrs Hewson wrote: “The gate and fence have been constructed without planning permission and there has been no notification or consultation with us. The couple bought the house on plush Vico Road in the 1980s. A nearby property sold for almost €5 million last year.

Bono’s pal Gavin Friday, who lives next door, has also objected to the new development it is reported.

Mr O’Regan said he has widespread community support for regenerating the disused tearoom and chalets. He claims the site has attracted anti-social behaviour in the past.

It’s understood Mr O’Regan secured planning permission for a development there in 2009 but that fell victim to the recession and was abandoned.
