Bono's Dalkey rooftop bar dreams crushed by An Bord Pleanála

Bono's plans to open a Dalkey rooftop bar have been squashed by An Bord Pleanála.

The U2 superstar was among a group of people hoping to redevelop the Tramyard site in the Dublin 4 suburb but have run into local resistance.

The plans were originally submitted in 2019 and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council granted permission for the development which included a roof pavilion and garden, retail and cultural space, bar and restaurant use and space for offices and a health centre.

However, the council's decision was appealed to An Bord Pleanála by Dalkey Community Council, various individuals and Clós Nua, the company driving the plan, for different reasons.

This week An Bord Pleanála gave the green light for the development to go ahead, but scrapped plans for the third-floor pavilion, walkway and garden.

The board said the reason for this was: "In the interest of visual amenity, having regard to the location of the site in the Dalkey architectural conservation area and the proximity of the site to protected structures."

A revised set of drawings omitting the third floor pavilion will have to be submitted to the planning authority before construction can begin.

Dublin Live has contacted a U2 spokesperson for comment.
