Bono and Glen Hansard’s Christmas Eve Busk to take place online for second year

Bono and Glen Hansard's annual Christmas Eve Busk, synonymous with festive celebrations in Dublin, will take place online again this year.

The busk, which normally takes place at the top of Grafton Street, will now be live streamed via YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram from St Patrick's Cathedral.

Last year, the busk raised a whopping €1.5 million for charity.

The proceeds raised from this year's event will go to the Dublin Simon Community.

Kicking off at at 9pm on Christmas Eve, the special live stream will feature a series of interviews alongside musical and spoken word performances.

It will be totally free to watch with viewers encouraged to donate what they can to the charity which supports 40,000 people across Ireland each year. The Simon Community aims to help 9,000 people across the country who don't have homes to go to this Christmas.

As well as Bono and Glen Hansard, other artists viewers can expect to see include Dermot Kennedy, Damien Rice, and Lisa O'Neill.

Collective Films filmmaker Mark Logan will be responsible for streaming the event live on the Dublin Simon Community’s social media pages.

According to the Dublin Simon Community, 6,335 are expected to spend Christmas in emergency accommodation in Dublin this year, including 4,432 total adults, 799 families, 3,085 single adults and 1,903 children.

Dublin Simon Community CEO Sam McGuinness said in November: "If numbers in emergency accommodation continue on the worrying trajectory of the last few months, at least 6,335 men, women and children will be spending Christmas in emergency accommodation.

"As it is, Christmas is an incredibly challenging time for people experiencing homelessness. It can trigger childhood trauma, make them think about family and friends they no longer see and serve as a stark reminder of the loneliness and uncertainty of their current circumstances.

"It’s particularly tough for the single women and men in our services, many of whom have nowhere else to go on the day."
