Bonnie Tyler wakes up from coma as team issue health update

Singer Bonnie Tyler has woken up from a medically induced coma but is still in intensive care in Portugal.

The 75-year-old was reportedly rushed to hospital in Faro in May after experiencing intense abdominal pain.

After discovering a serious tear in her bowel, she underwent emergency intestinal surgery, and was then put into an induced coma by doctors following complications.

It was reported by Portuguese media that she suffered a heart attack when doctors first tried to bring her out of the coma several weeks ago.

The singer’s team have now provided an update on her health.

The post on her website states that she "was no longer in a coma but remains very unwell and in intensive care in hospital in Portugal".

It adds: "Although her condition is improving it is a slow process. Her doctors remain confident that she will make a good recovery but it is going to take time.”

All of Tyler’s summer tour dates have been cancelled or postponed, with the statement on her site apologising to fans but adding: “We hope to see you next year instead."

The statement thanked fans for the “tremendous sympathy and support from around the world,” adding that Tyler was aware of it and grateful for the good wishes.

Tyler's team has now asked for privacy, saying that further updates will follow when there are significant developments.

Tyler is best known for her smash hit Total Eclipse of the Heart in 1983, which passed a billion streams on Spotify earlier this year.

The song was UK number one for two weeks, and also spent four weeks at the top of the US charts.

She had four other Top Ten hits including It’s A Heartache and Holding Out For A Hero, and represented the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, finishing 19th.

She was made an MBE for her services to music in 2023.
