'Bonnie Blue Flag Day': Have you got a Saltire to put up this Saturday?

YES activists are encouraging Scots to fly the Saltire flag on Saturday in response to coronation celebrations.

The National Saltire Day on May 6, or “Bonnie Blue Flag Day” as organisers are calling it, is to signal the unity of the Yes movement and provide international media with images of Saltire's contrasting against Union Jack flags.

David Macey-Lillie, an activist since the 1960s, and James Scott, founder of The Scottish Resistance, have been getting in touch with Yes groups across the country in the hope of their idea picking up traction.

Macey-Lille had the idea whilst watching an Independence Live livestream show one evening which discussed what Scots could do to bring the different factions of Yes together.

He said: “I thought with all these street parties on with Union Jack flags everywhere, what could we do? We could stick a Saltire on our window.

“It means we know we’re doing something for Scotland and the movement, and not something for the Yoon fest. It’s literally that, the simplest thing ever.”

The idea has grown wings he said, with interest from several groups including Wales for Scottish Independence, but more are welcome as the “more that know the better”.

Macey-Lille said that in the Scottish Borders, the idea of a street party this weekend in favour of the coronation is the only idea around so this is something to give Yessers at home a way to signal their support for Yes and unity of Scots without going to the two rallies in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The retired engraver said he hoped to see some Saltires flying on Saturday. He added: “Imagine what it would look like. A sea in the streets, with every second window having a Saltire in it. It would fill you with pride.”
