Bonkers party bus gets stuck trying to cross notorious East Kilbride bridge

A bonkers bus driver gave locals a laugh when his party bus got stuck trying to cross Newhousemill Bridge.

An eagle-eyed St Leonards resident captured the moment The Bonkers Bus approached the single-lane bridge at Newhousemill Road and struggled to manoeuvre the notoriously tight bend.

Police were called to the scene yesterday which one witness described as "something out of a comedy sketch".

Traffic was backed up along the 'danger' road while officers guided the bus driver back to safety.

He said: "Look at the appropriate name of the bus that tried to go over the narrow bridge on Newhousemill Road before having to be guided back by police - much to the consternation of queuing traffic!

Problems with Newhousemill Bridge and narrow road have led locals to call for traffic calming measures for a number of years.

One of the biggest issues is lorries blindly following sat-nav guidance and then having to reverse into the parking area of the nearby cottages to turn around.

The bridge is an accident blackspot and has been hit on several occasions by vehicles – some of which have been too wide to cross safely.

In November a car ploughed into a cottage for the second time in just 18 months.

South Lanarkshire Council have promised to install improved signage leading to the bend and bridge as well as bollards to protect nearby properties.
