Bonhill mum launches festive drive to help those in need over Christmas

Generous residents in Dumbarton and the Vale are rallying round to help those in need this Christmas.

A festive Facebook page aimed at helping struggling families has received an “overwhelming” response.

Bonhill woman Louise McFarlane was inspired to create the social media page ‘Let’s Help Each Other To Make Xmas Special (West Dunbartonshire)’ after her sister advertised her son’s PlayStation online.

Louise said: “My sister’s little boy, Robbie, said he wanted to give it to someone who needed it for Christmas.

“The response she got was overwhelming. So many people sent messages regarding their struggle this Christmas.”

The plight of struggling families inspired 43-year-old Louise to help out those finding it difficult to make wishes come true this festive season.

She said: “I set up the page so kids could pass on toys to families who are finding it hard to make ends meet.”

Others have got in on the act to help boost the appeal and reach out to struggling residents. Louise said: “One of my friends, Wilma Rodgers, has made a drop-off point at her home and her house is like Santa’s grotto.

“She went to the women’s refuge to support a young family with three kids who had nothing this year.”

Residents with items suitable for donation take a picture of the gifts to post and can decide who it is allocated to. But there are other ways for local families to get involved.

Louise explained: “We have also had offers of people donating food vouchers or buying a toy for someone.”

Second-hand items donated are sanitised before being passed on to families.

The community’s response to the page, especially in the tough times created by the coronavirus pandemic, has inspired Louise to reach even more residents who face tough times.

The mum-of-two, said: “I’m so proud to come from West Dunbartonshire as the people always pull together in times like this.”
