Bongani Zungu quarantine blow revealed as Rangers boss Steven Gerrard provides Kemar Roofe injury update

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has revealed his side have been hit with a pre-match blow with new signing Bongani Zungu forced into quarantine ahead of the clash with Celtic.

The South African won't make his debut against the Premiership champions due to strict covid protocols, with Kemar Roofe and Joe Aribo remaining serious injury doubts ahead of the visit to Parkhead.

Speaking at his pre-match Rangers press conference, he said: "Bongani Zungu is currently in quarantine so we sadly won't see him for another 10 days or so. We have sorted him with gym equipment so he can train from home.

"We are still assessing the international players who have arrived. We won't have a full update on the International boys until later today.

"Joe Aribo and Roofe are really close but this game may be a little bit too soon for them to return."

Meanwhile, Gerrard has promised Rangers won't let their guard down ahead of Saturday's blockbuster clash with Celtic.

The bookies have shortened the Ibrox sides odds of an away win with Neil Lennon's side potentially without Ryan Christie, Odsonne Edouard, Nir Bitton and Hatem Elhamed.

But Gerrard has railed against any suggestions his side will take anything for granted are wide of the mark as he looks to mastermind consecutive wins in Glasgow's east end for the first time in 25 years.

He said: "We are not focused on no fans, we are focused on our gameplan.

"We have had not much time on the training pitch. We know this will be a very tough challenge and we will not be going over-confident."
