What Rangers target Bongani Zungu would add to Steven Gerrard's side if he completes Ibrox switch

South African international Bongani Zungu looks set to sign for Rangers on a loan deal.

The 27-year-old defensive midfielder is reportedly about to join the Ibrox club for a season, however the deal could become permanent in January with his contract at French side Amiens up next summer.

But who exactly is Zungu, and what can he add to Steven Gerrard's Rangers?

Well the midfielder was valued at around €2-3million earlier this summer and has spent the last three years playing for Amiens in France.

He joined the club in 2017 as they were promoted to Ligue 1 for the first time in their history, but looks set to leave after their relegation last campaign.

Zungu is described as a defensively-minded player, although footage online shows he's got quick feet and composure in tight areas, along with an impressive ability to hit accurate, long passes.

He's not just a tough tackling midfielder – he's a player whose passing ability could help Rangers dictate matches, and break down opponents who are making life difficult.

In addition to Rangers, has was also attracting attention from Real Mallorca in La Liga earlier this summer. The Spanish club were even said to have been keen to take him in January but a deal failed to materialise.

He told Get French Football News earlier this summer: "I almost left in January, and I think the club understands and they know that I’m looking to spread my wings, to get a new challenge, and to be honest I’m ready for that.

"But you don’t know what the future holds.

"I love the club; the president is amazing, and the fans.

"But personally I would like to move on with my career, and hopefully it happens.

"I would love to play in Spain, in La Liga. I think the league is nice, the teams play football, and yeah I would like to hopefully get a club in Spain.

"I would like to play in the Champions’ League, or maybe one day play in England. I don’t know, you never know! So play in the Champions’ League, play in England or in La Liga in one of the big teams."
