Bongani Zungu 'nears' Rangers switch after deal breakthrough for midfield target

Rangers are closing in on the signing of long-term midfield target Bongani Zungu   - according to a report.

The 27-year-old has been desperate to leave Amiens after their relegation to Ligue 2 in France.

And now Kickoff report a deal for Zungu is set to happen before the close of play on Monday with a fee set to be agreed. It was reported in July that the French outfit wanted £3.6m for their star turn.

Steven Gerrard has made no secret of his desire to add to his midfield and the South African international was a target earlier this summer for the Ibrox boss and sporting director Ross Wilson.

Any agreement appeared dead in the water with focus turning to Preston's Daniel Johnson in recent weeks.

But now Zungu is set to be on the move after Olympiacos also showed a keen interest in landing the combative midfielder.

It comes after Rangers assistant boss Gary McAllister admitted on Sunday that his side were keen to bolster their squad before the deadline.

He said:  "At a place like this we are continually looking to improve and try to get better and if something positive happens that will be good. We just have to wait and see what happens.

"Ross is in complete charge of that and over the piece since we've been here, we have always been able to show a bit of imagination to create a deal and make something happen.

"I would agree that (it needs to be someone who will come straight into the team, not a squad man). I think if there was anything going to happen it would have to be a player who was close to coming right into the first team.

"It's difficult to comment on who's going to be in and who's going to be out, we just have to wait and see."
