Bongani Zungu faces Rangers international sweat as champions ponder South Africa withdrawal

Rangers are set to decide if they will allow midfielder Bongani Zungu to travel for his South Africa's two African Cup of Nations qualifiers later this month.

South Africa boss Molefi Ntseki wants to have Zungu available for their home game against Ghana and an away tie against Sudan.

But his participation is complicated by current UK Government coronavirus restrictions as South Africa is on the Red List of restricted countries.

That means he would have to self-isolate for ten days on his return - but Sudan isn't on the Red List.

His country may compromise by only playing Zungu for the match in Omdurman, Sudan to avoid the restrictions on his return to Glasgow, if Rangers give him the go-ahead to travel.

Ntseki said: "Percy Tau from Brighton and Bongani Zungu at Rangers are meeting with their respective clubs and I will then engage with the players so that if we have to make any other arrangements, they’ve given us the go-ahead.

"If the issue is coming to South Africa, we can always compromise by meeting up with them in Sudan for the second match after the Ghana game.

FIFA issued a circular that clubs can decide whether or not they will allow their players to leave for international duty due to Covid. I had spoken to all overseas-based players to assess the situation and we had agreed to revisit their concerns after the call-up letters were issued.

“The issue is that South Africa is in the Red Zone, but Sudan isn’t and they can then go back to the UK from Sudan. But that decision will be taken by the club and we will have to negotiate with them regarding any plans.

"We can possibly have 23 players for the Ghana game and then the full quota in Sudan."
