Bonfire Night: How to stay safe if you are doing your own firework displays this year

Bonfire Night is next month, on the 5 November and is well known for its elaborate firework displays.

If you're thinking of doing your display from your garden, fireworks are readily available in most supermarkets in the run-up to the day.

Safety is a key concern when using fireworks - the Children's Burn Trust said over 500 children under 16 are taken to A&E with related injuries in the four weeks surrounding Bonfire Night.

With most injuries occurring at family or private displays, it's essential to keep safe. Firefighters are also urging that safety is prioritised.

Here's a guide on how to stay safe if you are doing your own firework displays this year.

Read the instructions

Each box of fireworks has instructions - it's crucial to read them because they can have important things to consider. For example, once the firework is lit, the box says how far people need to stand back.

Buy from licensed sellers

Most supermarkets will sell high-quality fireworks that are designed to be as safe as possible. It's illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to buy or carry fireworks.

Keep pets indoors

Pets are usually scared of loud noises like fireworks, so it's best to keep them inside with supervision.

Get your timings right

There are strict curfews on fireworks. On Bonfire Night, fireworks are allowed until midnight. It's also a good idea to let your neighbours know - just so that they can be prepared.

Stop, Drop and Roll

Ahead of lighting any firework, it is wise to tell the people watching that in the event their clothes do catch fire to stop, drop to the ground and roll around a few times while covering their face.
