Bonfire Night 2021: The best places to watch fireworks for free in Bristol

After nearly all fireworks displays were cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, there is plenty of excitement ahead of this year's Bonfire Night.

There are plenty of displays taking place across the Bristol region this weekend where you're likely to see a dazzling array of rockets and fountains, but in a city filled with great vantage points, there are plenty of great locations from where you can enjoy a fantastic view of the action.

Head to any of the city's highest points or a large open space and look to the skies for a wonderful view of the various displays going on.

Listed below are some of the very best places to go firework-spotting in Bristol.

Dundry Hill

A view from Dundry Hill (Dan Regan)

Just south of Bristol, Dundry Hill offers stunning panoramic views across the city.

Hike up to the trig point where you can see the tower of the Church of St Michael, and you're sure to see some great firework action with the Clifton Suspension Bridge and Severn Bridge as a backdrop.

Troopers Hill

Troopers Hill in St George, around three miles from the city centre, is also a great shout when it comes to seeing fireworks explode above the city.

The nature reserve overlooking the River Avon has been quarried and mined in the past and has a variety of wild plants, animals, rocky crags and gullies.

Clifton Downs

Clifton Downs is a huge area of protected parkland perfect for spotting fireworks. Why not take a flask filled with hot chocolate, some camping chairs and a blanket to the vast green space and enjoy the fireworks from there?

Bedminster Down

Bedminster Down is a popular area from which to watch balloons fly over the city during the annual Balloon Fiesta, and it's a great place to watch fireworks, too.

Brandon Hill

If you don’t want to leave the city centre to see some fireworks, Brandon Hill is probably your best bet.

The nature park is a haven for wildlife, so you might also spot some squirrels as well as some fireworks.

Clifton Observatory

The Observatory next to Clifton Suspension Bridge offers great views across Bristol.

You’ll be able to see fireworks in every direction.
