NSW Police has confirmed that the two gunmen involved in the mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday evening were a father and his son.
Overnight, the death toll has risen to 16, including 50-year-old shooter Sajid Akram, who was killed at the scene. The second alleged shooter, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, is currently being treated in hospital under heavy police guard. It has been confirmed that there was no third shooter involved.
Just after 6:30pm on Sunday, the alleged suspects opened fire on an event marking the first day of Hanukkah, where at least 1000 people were in attendance.
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed on Monday morning that the 50-year-old deceased shooter was a licensed firearm holder who had six firearms legally in his possession.
Police raided homes in Bonnyrigg and Campsie overnight and seized six firearms.
Lanyon said there was “no indication” either of the men involved in the shooting was planning the attack, though both he and ASIO were aware of the 24-year-old alleged shooter. Lanyon refused to share details about a potential motive for the attack.
“We’re still very early in the investigation; we’re happy to provide information,” Lanyon said. “I want to give our investigators the opportunity to investigate thoroughly without speculation. We heard a lot of information was coming forward. I want to make sure it’s accurate … our investigation will be thorough.”
The incident has officially been declared a terrorist attack and federal authorities have joined the investigation.
Several world leaders, including US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have spoken out about the attack and condemned the actions of the alleged gunmen.
The death toll from the massacre has risen to 16, including a 10-year-old girl. It is Australia’s worst mass shooting in 29 years.
