Bondi beach reopens to swimmers and surfers as coronavirus lockdown relaxed

Sydney's famous Bondi Beach reopened to swimmers and surfers today, five weeks after it was shut over the coronavirus pandemic.

Hundreds braved cool autumn weather to return to the water soon after the gates opened.

The beach has been reopened for exercise only, while visitors are being counted to ensure social distancing and are not allowed to linger on the sand.

Similar arrangements are in place on neighbouring beaches and, once their exercise is over, visitors are being urged to head straight home.

The move comes as Health Minister Greg Hunt announced just one case of community transmission in the previous 24 hours. “We are winning but we have not won yet,” he said.

Bondi was completely shut for five weeks after large crowds continued to flout the curbs by sunbathing and swimming there.
