Sydney man Ahmed al-Ahmed, who was widely hailed for disarming one of the attackers during last year’s deadly Bondi Beach shooting, has been charged with assault, according to local media reports.

As per the Australian broadcaster ABC, he is accused of assaulting his father during an incident at a home in Bankstown, located in Sydney's south-west, in March.

When asked for confirmation, New South Wales police said, “On Sunday 15 March 2026 police received a report of an alleged assault at a home in Bankstown on Monday 9 March 2026”.

A 44-year-old man was subsequently charged this week with common assault and stalking, they said, as quoted by news agency AFP.

He is scheduled to appear before Bankstown Local Court on June 29, the police added.

Hero of Bondi attack faces fresh legal trouble

Ahmed rose to global attention after footage showed him wrestling a gun away from one of the attackers during the December mass shooting at a Jewish event in Bondi, where 15 people were killed.

He was shot multiple times in the incident while trying to stop the attack, which authorities described as an antisemitic terrorist act.

He was widely praised for his actions, met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and a public fundraiser reportedly raised more than A$2.5 million–A$3 million.

He was also honoured locally and invited to major public events following his recovery.

‘Not true at all’, says Ahmed

Ahmed has denied the allegations, telling ABC that the claims were “fake information… it’s not true at all”.

Police, however, have not identified victims or provided further details, in line with standard practice in such cases.

The Bondi Beach attack, which killed 15 people and injured dozens, was Australia’s deadliest mass shooting since 1996.

One of the alleged attackers, Sajid Akram, was killed by police during the incident, while his son has also faced multiple charges linked to the case.
