Bombers AFL great Lloyd lashes old club

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd has ripped into his old club after Sunday's loss to Fremantle. (AAP)

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd has blasted his former club's "damning" Sunday AFL loss, where they were woeful in falling to Fremantle by 48 points.

The 270-game, 926-goal legend labelled the performance "as poor a loss as you'll see" and said the Bombers would not play finals.

After returning to the top eight last year, they are now 1-4 and their only win has been by four points over unfancied Adelaide in round four.

"It was a horrible, horrible loss," he told AFL Media.

"Fremantle just broke them ... when the game was there to be won in the third quarter, Fremantle just stepped all over them and there was no fight from Essendon.

"This year they haven't shown anything at all ... there's been nothing really to show for the season after five rounds."

Essendon led early and displayed strong tackling pressure in their forward 50, but were lamentable in the second half as they were blown away.

"Really, really disappointing - there's losing and there's losing the way they lost yesterday," Lloyd said.

"They were outworked by Fremantle through work rate ... Essendon had no answers in terms of their inside-50 work.

"It was damning just about in every department and then (Matt) Taberner kicked seven, which sums it up pretty much, players don't really do that very often.

"It was very, very poor."

Lloyd was critical of the Bombers midfielders, particularly one passage of play where Darcy Parish opted against chasing Docker and former Essendon player Travis Colyer.

"Does he (Parish) want to work hard to chase? No, he doesn't," Lloyd said.

"That's lazy from Darcy Parish ... that is symbolic of Essendon's day yesterday.

"Dylan Shiel has been around a long time, he's been disappointing so far, he was poor.

"(Andrew) McGrath? I don't know anyone who's enhanced their reputation at Essendon."
