Bombay Bicycle Club at Leeds O2 Academy review, setlist, photos and more

Bombay Bicycle Club returned to Leeds for a retro indie party topped with a little reinvention.

Back in 2016, the London band, led by Jack Steadman took an indefinite break with fans unsure of whether they’d ever return.

Thankfully, not only have Bombay Bicycle Club returned but they are sounding as good as ever, with new material in their arsenal.

Latest record Everything Else Has Gone Wrong was released earlier this month and we were treated to a few tracks during Saturday’s Leeds O2 Academy show.

Eat, Sleep, Wake (Nothing but You) opened the band’s set with Is It Real and Good Day being some of the other new offerings.

Ahead of Bombay Bicycle Club’s performance support came from The Big Moon. The group have been tipped for success and the four-piece were certainly one of the best warm-ups the O2 has welcomed in recent times.

Like their tour partners, The Big Moon, also have a new album out and they certainly earned some new fans as they played tracks from Walking Like We Do.

It was clear to see the band enjoyed the experience and undoubtedly they’ll be playing their own headline gigs in Leeds in the near future.

During Bombay Bicycle Club’s set, Steadman, spoke to the crowd about the challenges of returning after their hiatus, which saw band members work on their own musical projects, and the trepidation of seeing whether their fans are still interested.

It is fair to say, mere seconds into the band’s Leeds return Steadman’s fears must have been alleviated. As the crowd danced away and sang enthusiastically (if not always in tune) to the frontman’s soft and gentle vocals.

Set highlights included back catalogue favourites Feel, Luna and Always Like This with the latter bringing the curtain down on a two-song encore.
