Bomb threat at John Lewis store with shoppers evacuated and roads closed

Shoppers were evacuated from a John Lewis store after a bomb threat was received.

Police say they were contacted by the department store in Kingston, Greater London, this morning who reported the threat.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and officers searched the store.

Police have said they do not believe the incident is terror related.

A spokesman from John Lewis told MyLondon : "We can confirm that our John Lewis and Waitrose shops in Kingston were evacuated this morning as instructed by the police.

"The safety of our customers and Partners is our top priority and we are working closely with the emergency services as they handle the situation."

A shocked shopper tweeted: "Just turned back from walking into Kingston.

"There is a bomb scare in John Lewis and the whole centre is closed off. Who would do this?"

Another wrote: "Bomb threat in John Lewis, Kingston, whole area blocked off."

One man warned people to "avoid Kingston at all costs.

He added: "There’s been a bomb scare in John Lewis."

A spokesman from the Met Police told Mirror Online: "At approximately 9,47am on Wednesday, 28 October, police were contacted by a department store at Wood Street, Kingston where a bomb threat had been received.

"The store has been evacuated and London Ambulance Service are in attendance as a precaution.

"There have been no reported injuries.

"A number of closures, including Kingston Bridge, are in place while officers search the premises. Enquiries continue.

"This incident is not believed to be terror related."

In a tweet, Kingston council earlier wrote: "Traffic Police have closed Wood Street between the Bentall Centre and John Lewis due to an incident."

There were reports of a large police presence with one eyewitness saying on Twitter: "What’s happening in Kingston this morning?

"Wood st all shut off and cops everywhere.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service spokesperson said multiple teams had been despatched.

He said: “We were called at 10.01am today to reports of an incident off Wood Street, Kingston.

“We dispatched an incident response officer and our hazardous area response teams (HART).

“We are working with other emergency services and remain at the scene."

Kingston Police have confirmed the cordon has been lifted and shops are now able to reopen.
