Bomb squads race to property after discovery of possible grenade

Police officers called for backup this morning after finding a possible grenade while searching a property.

A bomb squad team raced to Market Street in Stalybridge while police evacuated neighbours at 7am.

Three ambulances also went to the scene near Krunchy Fried Chicken after police, who were already searching the building with a warrant in the early hours, discovered the suspicious item.

At first, it appeared to be a grenade but when the bomb squad assessed it they found it 'was not viable'.

It is thought officers were at the scene for at least three hours.
