Bomb squad swoop on Newton Mearns street as residents evacuated amid major police operation

Bomb squad officers carried out a major operation in a quiet suburb of Glasgow this afternoon, following an alleged disturbance nearby on Thursday evening. Police officers roped off a large area of Malletsheugh Road in Newton Mearns, which has been closed at both ends by police vehicles.

Images taken further up the road show the presence of a Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team, a Scottish Ambulance Service incident response unit, a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service vehicle and various police cars, as well as a mobile wellbeing unit.

Portaloos have been provided at the site, suggesting officers may be there for some time. It is understood that families have been evacuated from the immediate area and Police Scotland insisted there was "no ongoing threat to the public".

It follows an arrest nearby during an alleged disturbance on Thursday evening. East Renfrewshire provost Mary Montague represents families in the area.

She said: “I have been informed homes have been evacuated. I hope the situation is resolved quickly and safely. Our emergency services do an amazing job. They go towards danger when the rest of us would run away.”

Ironically, the scene provides an aerial view of Glasgow, similar to the opening credits of the fictional TV detective series Taggart.

Police provided little detail of what was taking place. The area is a mix of residential properties and small businesses. A garage owner in the area claimed he was prevented from attending his workshop by the police blockade.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were called to a property in Pilmuir Holdings, Newton Mearns, at around 6.15pm on Thursday, February 2, 2023 following a report of a man causing a disturbance.

"A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this. Officers remain at this address and enquiries are continuing. Officers remain at the address and there is no ongoing threat to the public.”

The Ministry of Defence have been contacted for comment.
