The Royal Navy Bomb disposal carried out a controlled explosion at Warbeth beach.

It comes after a Coastguard Rescue Officer found the 'unusual object' on the shore at the bottom of his garden yesterday afternoon.

HM Coastguard - Orkney and Shetland explained: "His training immediately kicked in, recognising the object looked like ordnance.

"Following consultation with Royal Navy Bomb disposal, they arrived in Stromness this morning and carried out a controlled explosion at Warbeth beach.

"The piece of ordnance was a 3 inch historic projectile, likely from WW2 with residual TNT.

"Whilst these items sometimes look like scrap, it’s always best to check with the experts."

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.

The Royal Navy have also been contacted for comment.
