Bomb squad seal off Edinburgh footpath after hand grenade found

A Bomb disposal team is in attendance on an Edinburgh footpath amid reports of a hand grenade being found.

Edinbvurgh Police have confirmed that the EOD rushed to a footpath at the Union canal after the discovery was made.

Streets around the Union Canal in Edinburgh have been cordoned off after an item thought to be an antique hand grenade was found.

The footpath has been closed at Harrison Place and Gibson Terrace as officers lock down the scene to deal with the incident.

Yeaman Place has also been closed as a precaution.

Edinburgh Police wrote on Twitter: "Officers & EOD are in attendance at the Union Canal, Edinburgh after a report of what appears to be a recovered antique hand grenade.

"The canal footpath is closed at Harrison Place & Gibson Terrace.

"Yeaman Place has also been closed, as a precaution, and a cordon is in place."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers were called to a report of, what appeared to be, a recovered antique hand grenade from the Union Canal, Edinburgh.

"The canal footpath is closed at Harrison Place and Gibson Terrace. Yeaman Place has also been closed to both road traffic and pedestrians, as a precaution, and a cordon is in place to ensure the safety of the public.

"Officers and EOD are in attendance and we would like to thank the public for their patience."
