Bomb squad scrambles to Long Ashton after WW2 grenade is dug up

People living in Long Ashton were told to stay at home for two good reasons.

As well as isolating from coronavirus, residents of Lynbrook had to shield themselves from a World War Two grenade.

The rusty relic was uncovered as someone was digging their garden on Thursday, April 9,.

Police were contacted and the bomb squad found the once lethal weapon was benign.

One resident said: "A man was digging in his garden and found it.

"Police were called and the bomb squad was there about two hours.

"They sealed off Lynbrook and families were told to stay inside.

"The entrance to Lynbrook was taped off."

An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesman said: "We were called to reports of what appeared to be a hand grenade, discovered by someone working in their garden in Lynbrook in Long Ashton at about 1.20pm yesterday (Thursday).

"EOD were called who advised the householder to remain in his property. No evacuation was required.

"They attended and confirmed that it was a second world war hand grenade but it was empty and they removed it."
