Bomb squad race to Scots home after 'live' 25lb explosive discovered in garden

Bomb disposal experts were deployed to a home on Shetland today after a "live" explosive device was found in its garden.

The device was one of two suspected pieces of ordnance discovered on Sunday, March 7.

The coastguard locked down the area in Sandside Mossbank until the arrival of the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal this morning.

Once at the scene, they discovered a 25lb 'live' Anti Tank projectile which was removed from the property's garden and safely destroyed in a controlled explosion.

The second device turned out to be a gas cylinder which did not need any further action.

Writing about the incident, HM Coastguard Orkney & Shetland said: "Royal Navy Bomb Disposal arrived in Shetland this morning to deal with two reports of ordnances in Sandside Mossbank.

"The first item was inspected and found to be a live 25lb AT projectile.

"This was removed from the back garden of a property and destroyed by a controlled detonation nearby.

"The second item was inspected and found to be a a as cylinder (as suspected) which required no further action.

"Coastguard Rescue Officers from Shetland manned a cordon from Sunday to ensure public safety until the arrival of Royal Navy Bomb disposal."
