Bomb squad race to ongoing incident in Edinburgh as section of city is cordoned off

Bomb disposal units have been called to the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh with a section of the city centre cordoned off.

Parts of Princes Street have been sealed off by emergency services, with a large police presence in the area.

Video footage shared online shows a bomb disposal unit on the street, while a number of police cars have been seen lined up along the nearby Hanover Street.

The gallery has been closed to the public while the object is examined, however they say they hope to reopen on Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson for the Gallery said: "Earlier today (Monday 20 Sept) a suspicious object was found outside the Scottish National Gallery. Police Scotland were notified and as a precaution the Gallery was evacuated to ensure everyone’s safety while this matter is looked into. We hope to reopen as normal tomorrow morning (Tuesday 21 September)."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police are currently dealing with an ongoing incident at a building on the Mound, Edinburgh. A cordon is in place and surrounding roads are closed, with diversions in place. Enquiries are continuing."

A number of Lothian Buses services are being diverted away from sections of the city centre due to the incident.
