Bomb squad in Salford discovered 'suspicious item' that turned out to be a firework

A suspicious item discovered by police inside a car was found to be a firework.

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed the suspected suspicious item was not a viable device.

Officers seized the car on Blackfriars Road, in Salford, on Wednesday evening as part of an ongoing investigation into the supply of drugs.

The vehicle was taken to an industrial unit off First Avenue, in Trafford Park.

Bomb disposal officers could be seen searching inside the vehicle on Thursday, May 14.

A police cordon was put in place on First Avenue.

Royal Logistics Corps were carrying out assessments on the item while dressed in protective gear.

The item was later discovered to be a firework.

Police scaled back the operation and no controlled explosion took place.

A statement released by GMP on Thursday evening said: "Last night (Wednesday, May 13, 2020), officers seized a car from Blackfriars Road in Salford as part of an ongoing investigation into drug supply.

"The vehicle was taken to an area off First Avenue in Trafford Park and as officers were searching the vehicle this afternoon (Thursday, May 14, 2020), they came across a suspicious item.

"Bomb disposal attended to make an assessment of the object. The object has not been found to be a viable device."
