Bomb squad evacuate Shetland primary school after suspicious item found

A primary school on Shetland has been evacuated after the discovery of a suspicious item.

A bomb squad is currently in attendance at the school at Scalloway primary school after a historic ordnance was found at a local beach and taken into the building around 11.45am.

A cordon has been placed around the area and parents were called to pick up their children.

Shetland Coastguard and the local council are assisting officers as enquiries continue.

A police spokesperson said: “Police and emergency services are currently at a primary school in Scalloway, Shetland after an historic ordnance was found at a local beach and taken to the school around 11.45am on Friday, 26 May 2023.

“A cordon has been put in place around the area and the school has been evacuated as a precaution.

“Shetland Coastguard and Shetland [Islands] Council are assisting.

“Explosive Ordnance Disposal have been made aware and will attend. Enquiries are continuing.”
