The bomb disposal team was called out to help, while firefighters also joined the effort from around 3.30pm.

Crews stayed in the area until around 5pm, and the scene on Glamis Avenue was clear by Saturday evening.

GMP says the 'historic grenade' was seized to be disposed of appropriately.

A GMP spokesperson said: "Officers were called just before 2.30pm yesterday (January 8, 2022) to a report of a grenade found at Glamis Avenue in Heywood.

"A suspected historic grenade was found on arrival and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit attended and seized the item to dispose of it appropriately."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) added: “Just before 3.30pm on Saturday, January 8, firefighters were called to assist GMP with an incident on Glamis Avenue, Heywood.

"GMFRS crews were in attendance for around an hour and a half.”
