Bomb squad descend on Salford house over 'suspicious item' days after police found guns

The bomb squad was called in over a 'suspicious item' in a house in Salford tonight - a week after police founds guns in the same property during a raid.

An investigation has been ongoing at the property - on the corner of Goulden Street and Alexander Street in Langworthy -since last Tuesday when it was the subject of a dawn raid.

Two guns were recovered and four men arrested.

One of the men has since been charged with possession of a Section 5 firearm.

The other three have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Counter Terrorism officers assisted but it is understood they were not leading the investigation at the time.

It is unclear whether that has now changed or not.

Since September 8, residents said forensics officers have been going in and out of the rear of the house and a mobile police unit was set up.

But the activity stepped up significantly tonight when Goulden Street was put behind a large cordon and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team were called to the scene.

It is understood officers found an 'unknown substance' in the house that they wanted to be analysed.

Specialists at the fire service were also called in.

No houses were evacuated and police said the 'suspicious item' was not of any threat to the public.

In a statement, GMP said: "Officers searching an address on Goulden Street, Salford, found a suspicious item as part of an ongoing investigation.

"EOD attended the scene to assess the item and deemed it not to be of any threat to the wider public.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
