Bomb squad descend on Armley home to find explosive device was a firework

The bomb squad were called to a house in Armley on Sunday and people living nearby were evacuated after a police officer found an explosive device.

West Yorkshire Police officers were conducting a search of the property in Borrowdale Close at around 10am on February 2 when one of them found the device and raised the alarm.

An explosive ordinance disposal team, made up of military personnel, were called and they found that it was in fact a firework.

Police say the firework was "lawfully owned" by the person living at the property and the neighbours were evacuated for "a short period of time" while the bomb disposal team inspected the device.

Later that day officers were called to Westgate Retail Park in Wakefield, along with more than 140 firefighters, after a fierce blaze broke out.

No one was injured and the fire was eventually put out.
