Bomb squad descend after 'hand grenade' discovered in residential street

A bomb disposal unit rushed to a residential street after a 'hand grenade' was discovered.

The bomb squad descended on Second Avenue in Little Lever, Bolton, following a report of a suspicious items, believed to be a hand grenade, police have said.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police as well as paramedics joined the bomb disposal unit as they responded to the incident at around 2pm on Monday, February 8.

Dramatic pictures from the scene show specialist equipment being brought to the scene to deal with the potential threat.

A section of houses was cordoned off with police tape as the incident continued.

No arrests have been made in the wake of the report (JMG Universal Press)

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 2pm on Monday 8 February 2021 officers were called to Second Avenue, Little Lever, Bolton to a report of a suspicious item – believed to have been a hand grenade.

"EOD attended and an assessment deemed the device to pose no threat.

"No arrests have been made."

The scare came just one day after a hand grenade was found by a magnet fisher in a canal in nearby Astley on Sunday.

That incident was the second of its kind in just three weeks, as a young boy also found a hand grenade while magnet fishing in the River Douglas in Shevington in January.
