Bomb squad called to Welsh beach after explosive discovered

A bomb squad was called to a beach in Wales after an explosive was discovered. The beach, at Cemaes Bay, Anglesey, was closed to the public following the bomb squad's arrival.

A small rusted shell was found on the beach at 9am, and the bomb squad arrived at 5pm on Tuesday, April 25, Coastguard North and Mid Wales confirmed. The explosive was a small rusted shell, a few inches in length - approximately the length of a pen, as demonstrated in a photo.

Images shared on social media show bomb disposal teams working with the device on the pebble beach, with several emergency services vehicles parked along the coastline, North Wales Live reports.

The coastguard posted on Facebook: "Out [yesterday] with Cemaes Bay Coastguard Search and Rescue due to one of their team discovering ordinance. A very long day with the item being found at 9am and EOD (Bomb Disposal) arriving at 5pm to make safe and dispose of the item."

The outcome of it all was a "great result," said the coastguard, "with the item being safely removed and once more making the coastline safe again. Now home for cakes and medals."

Bomb squads have been called out several times in Wales in recent months, including in January when Cardiff's Lamby Way recycling centre was evacuated when workers drove to work with an unexploded shell strapped into their front passenger seat. In another case back in December, a 'suspicious device' was removed from a house in Bargoed and two men were arrested on suspicion of explosive substance offences.
