Bomb squad called to Skegness after reports of mortar on nearby beach

The bomb squad were called to Skegness after receiving reports of a mortar on the beach. 

A member of the public called police after the item was found at Gibraltar Point around 10am yesterday (Sunday July 7). 

The Ministry of Defence were called to the beach and the H.M Skegness Coastguard were also at the scene assisting, LincolnshireLive reports.

A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Police said: “At 10.04am yesterday a caller reported a possible mortar found on a beach at Gibraltar Point, Croft, near Skegness.  

“A team from the Ministry of Defence attended and took away the item. It was not believed to be a mortar.”

The item was not a bomb and was taken away by the bomb squad, according to the coastguard.

The Ministry of Defence has been contacted for comment on the incident.
