Bomb squad called to Seaton Delaval after World War Two grenade scare

Bomb disposal experts were called to a suspected World War Two grenade discovered in Seaton Delaval.

Police officers were called shortly after 3.30pm on Sunday about a possible grenade found near the train track in the Double Row area of Seaton Delaval.

A member of the public reported to police that they had found a World War Two Mills grenade.

Officers arrived at the scene and closed Station Road as a precaution while an investigation was carried out.

Bomb disposal experts arrived and found the device was not an explosive. It was then safely removed from the area.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 3.30pm yesterday (Sunday) we received a report of a possible grenade found near the train track in the Double Row area of Seaton Delaval.

“It was reported by a member of the public that a World War Two Mills grenade had been found.

“Officers attended the area and closed Station Road as a precaution. Following consultation with bomb disposal experts, it was ascertained that the device was not of an explosive nature, and the item was safely removed.

“We would like to thank the caller who made the report as well as the public for their cooperation.”
