Bomb squad called to Scots village and homes evacuated amid explosives fear

Several homes in Dumfries and Galloway were evacuated after a possible explosive was discovered.

Police were called at around 7.10pm on Thursday, April 22, to the Abbey Park area of Dundrennan.

Local reports claim the suspicious item had been discovered at a local beach before being brought home by a youngster with the alarm being raised a short time later.

A specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called to the scene while almost a dozen properties were evacuated as a precaution.

A large police cordon remained in place for several hours until the device was ‘made safe’ shortly before 11pm.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 7.10pm on Thursday, 22 April, officers were called to the Abbey Park area of Dundrennan following a report of possible unexploded ordnance being discovered.

“A cordon was put in place and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit was called to attend.

"The area was made safe just before 11pm and occupants were allowed back to their homes.

"Officers left the scene."
